IWD provides first responders with tools to recognize characteristics and traits of various disabilities and mental health disorders and provides best practices and up-to-date approaches, techniques, and communication tools to promote more positive interactions with people with disabilities. This course includes:

  • ADA requirements and accommodations
  • Overview of various characteristics of physical and developmental disabilities to include, deaf, cerebral palsy, seizure disorders, autism, downs syndrome, IDD and others
  • Anti-escalation techniques used to avoid sending someone into a meltdown or crisis
  • De-escalation techniques if someone is already in crisis, especially those with intellectual disabilities
  • IDD and mental health resources available for first responders
