The vast majority of law enforcement encounters are during non-violent, routine contacts. But at times, these contacts turns hostile because of an officer’s poor communication skills resulting in possible injury, liability for the officer and police department, bad publicity, and other adverse consequences. The purpose of this 19 minute video is to show how law enforcement officers can reduce the probability of a routine contact turning hostile through the use of fundamental communication techniques and active listening skills. Key topics include using a positive tone of voice, keeping emotions under control, knowing your desired goal or outcome for each situation, reading the other person’s facial expressions and body language, and other tips.
