Storage of Propane

1. Propane explosions

Never occur due to physical damage to a cylinder.

Can be caused by escaping gas through a damaged or defective valve or hose.

Can be caused by ignition by a spark from a furnace, garage door motor, light switch or cell phone.

2. Empty containers which have been in service when stored inside

Should not be considered as full containers when determining quantities.

Should be located in areas provided with a UL listed propane detector.

3. When handling and storing propane

Store unused cylinders outside and in an open-air storage cylinder safety cage or cabinet.

4. If one smells leaking propane gas, take the following precautions

Shut off the leaking gas cylinder if safe to do so or leave the area and call 911.

If indoors, warn others and leave the area immediately. Call 911. Do not return until permitted by proper officials.

5. Cylinders

Should be disposed through a propane retailer or distributor.

If damaged may be used if they do not leak gas.

Can be refilled only once past the expiration date.

Disposed with trash or in landfills.
